In a major boost for Papua New Guinea’s mining sector, 41 mining tenements have been officially approved, with licences awarded to a range of companies and individual applicants. This announcement comes as preparations are finalised for the official handover of the Mining Ministry’s vehicle on 28 April 2025, marking the conclusion of ministerial duties related to the mining sector.

A total of 38 licence applications have been approved, with only three applications rejected. Among the notable companies with approved licences are major industry players like Newcrest Exploration Limited (EL1704), K92 Mining Limited (EL1341), Frieda River Limited (EL1956, EL1957, EL1895), and Lihir Gold Limited (EL485). Small-scale and individual miners have also secured approvals, including Amai Waimayoko, Shalom Mala, Samuel Atsi, and Gamari Lingwaku, among others. The Mining Ministry’s vehicle will be officially handed back on 28 April 2025. The vehicle, which belongs to the Ministry, is being returned as the former Mining Minister has now taken up his new role as the Minister for Civil Aviation. Additionally, any other claims must be settled. This final settlement is part of clearing all obligations during his time leading the Mining Ministry and officially concludes his responsibilities within the sector. The Ministry highlighted that settling these matters is essential for maintaining good governance, accountability, and transparency in the administration of the sector.

The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening governance and service delivery, stating that the approval of the new licences and the completion of the handover process will allow for a smooth transition and continued strong regulatory engagement with stakeholders across Papua New Guinea. The approved licences pave the way for further exploration and production activities, reinforcing the mining industry as a vital contributor to the country’s economic growth. The Ministry has encouraged all license holders to begin preparations for their respective work programs, underlining the government’s commitment to facilitating responsible and sustainable mining development.
