
Mr Alfred Mokae has been officially appointed as the Chief National Statistician of Papua New Guinea following the publication of his appointment in the National Gazette.
The appointment was made by the Governor-General, Grand Chief Sir Bob Bofeng Dadae, under the provisions of the Statistical Services Act (Chapter 386) and the Regulatory Statutory Authorities (Appointment to Certain Offices) Act 2004.
According to National Gazette No. G205 dated Tuesday, 3 March 2026, the acting appointment of Mr John Igitoi as National Statistician has been revoked, paving the way for Mr Mokae’s substantive appointment.
Mr Mokae will serve a four-year term as the head of the National Statistical Office (Papua New Guinea), the government agency responsible for producing official national statistics.
As Chief National Statistician, Mr Mokae will oversee the collection, analysis and dissemination of important national data used by government and stakeholders for policy development, economic planning and monitoring of development progress in Papua New Guinea.
The appointment process was completed through the National Executive Council (Papua New Guinea) and published in the National Gazette as required by law.
Mr Mokae’s appointment takes effect from the date of publication of the instrument in the National Gazette.
