Alotau prepares for Population and Housing Census

PREPARATIONS are well underway in Milne Bay’s capital Alotau for the 2021 National Population and Housing Census.

Dimiki Doula Provincial Coordinator in Alotau said they will carry out listing and structural mapping for residents in the Alotau Urban Local Level Government (AULLG).

“All residents of Alotau Town are informed that listing and structural mapping for the AULLG area will commence on Thursday 28th January, 2021 through to February 4, 2021 part of the National Population and Housing Census 2021,” Mr Doula said.

He said the “objective of this exercise is to collect basic household data as well as correct plotting and mapping of each structure within the AULLG area for ease during the actual conduct of the main enumeration in July.”

“The Provincial Census Office therefore appeals to all residents within the various Census Units within the township area to accord all the cooperation to the Census takers who will be fronting up for short interviews at your doorsteps whilst doing sketch mapping of the structures in the area.

“Your support and assistance will be greatly appreciated, much to the benefit of the common goal of conducting a quality census in the province,” Mr Doula reiterated.

He said the exercise will follow from a three- day training for the Census Takers commencing today, Jan 25 at the Yumi Yet Lodge in Alotau.

Milne Bay Province is the twelfth province to sign a Census Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Statistical Office (NSO) on January 15 in Alotau.

The MoU was co-signed by the Milne Bay Provincial Administrator Ashan Numa and Acting National Statistician of NSO John Igitoi.

Provinces that have signed similar MoUs with NSO include: National Capital District, Morobe, Oro, West Sepik, East New Britain, West New Britain, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Jiwaka, Chimbu, Southern Highlands, Manus and Central. The MoU stipulates cost-sharing exercises and resource mobilization between respective provincial administrations and NSO in the administering of the 2021 Census.
