Member for Bulolo Sam Basil Jnr has tabled a petition in Parliament calling for urgent government action to rehabilitate the BuloloHighway, describing it as a vital lifeline for the economy and communities across Morobe and neighboring provinces.

The petition, presented on behalf of the Farmers and Settlers Association (FSA) and supported by the Poultry Industry Association, Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum, highlights the highway’s critical role in supporting the poultry, cattle, forestry, mining, and coffee industries.

“The Bulolo Highway is not just a road—it is the economic artery that sustains livelihoods, facilitates trade, and connects remote communities,” Mr Basil told Parliament.

He said the road’s deteriorating state and lack of consistent maintenance have raised serious concerns among stakeholders, affecting transport efficiency, public safety, and regional development.

The petition calls for:

  • An immediate assessment of the highway’s condition by the Department of Works and Highways.
  • Emergency funding for critical repairs.
  • A long-term maintenance strategy developed with industry and community input.
  • Consideration of public-private partnerships to ensure sustainable upkeep.

Mr Basil said rehabilitating the Bulolo Highway was not just a local concern but a national priority vital to economic growth and connectivity.

“Prompt action will safeguard livelihoods, support industries, and strengthen regional links,” he said.

The petition has been formally submitted to the Parliamentary Committee on Petitions for review and referral to the responsible agencies.
