WHAT you’re good at doing can change your life forever, if you put extra efforts into it.
These were the words of McDelyn Biki, a 28-year-old woman from Simbu Province. She emphasized that focusing on one’s strengths and putting in extra effort can be life-changing.
McDelyn pursued entrepreneurship in the SME sector due to limited employment opportunities in Papua New Guinea.
Biki earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering from China University of Petroleum in East China. Following six years of university studies, she returned to Papua New Guinea after successfully completing her degree.
Upon her return to the country, McDelyn submitted job applications, aiming to pursue her career in the professional industry. Unfortunately, her efforts yielded no positive results.
“For three years I searched for jobs but wasn’t accepted anywhere so I decided to move into SME, so I become self-employed to meet the high cost of living in the city,” McDelyn said.
McDelyn made the bold decision to launch her own business, “Lace Gallore”, specializing in Barber and Hair Saloon services. Initially commencing operations in 2023, she established her SME at 6-mile in Port Moresby. Despite the initial success, she encountered challenges related to transportation and women’s safety. Consequently, she opted to relocate to a safer and more secure location in the city, ensuring a conducive environment for her clients.
Today, Friday, March 8th, marked a significant milestone in her business career as McDelyn opened her new barber and salon office space at the Gordons Industrial Centre Business complex, located opposite the PNGFM office in Port Moresby.
McDelyn concluded by sharing an encouraging statement with other aspiring young people in Papua New Guinea who may find themselves in a situation similar to hers in the past.
“I’d like to encourage you all to discover your strength and commercialise it so that your true potential will be unleashed, so you become self-employed, progress well in business, as well as creating employment for other talented youths in Papua New Guinea as well,” she said.
Lace Gallore is officially open for business, welcoming potential customers in and around Port Moresby seeking hairstyling, trimming, or a professional fashion look. It is conveniently situated at the Gordons Business Centre, opposite the PNGFM Limited office.
