THE Minister of Internal Security, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili, addressed the importance of security needs and requirements for the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Papua New Guinea during the SEZ Summit in Port Moresby.
The summit, held on 7 to 9 of May brought together international guests speakers, government officials, law enforcement agencies, and stakeholders to discuss the challenges and priorities in setting up SEZs.
The Minister highlighted the general law and order situation in the country, which is a concern, and the need for agencies in the Law & Justice Sector to assist the government in minimizing instances of law and order and crimes in the country. The Minister shared the government’s commitment to ensuring that SEZs are established in a safe and secure environment to create an environment conducive to economic growth and development while ensuring the safety and security of the people are not compromised.
Several measures have been put in place, including increasing the capacity of law enforcement agencies, strengthening the justice system, and improving intelligence gathering capabilities. The government is also working closely with international partners to combat transnational crimes such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, and cybercrime. Addressing the root causes of crime, such as poverty, unemployment, and social inequality, is also a priority.
The Minister outlined the areas that law enforcement agencies should consider in the development plans for SEZs, including establishing a legal framework, a dedicated security force, intelligence gathering and analysis capabilities, crime prevention strategies, investigation and prosecution mechanisms, border security measures, cybersecurity protocols, training and capacity building programs, emergency response plans, collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, and community engagement.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment for all citizens and believes that the establishment of SEZs will play a key role in achieving this goal. The Minister looks forward to working together with all stakeholders to make this vision a reality.
