THE Inaugural Pacific Information and Communication Technology (PICT) Ministers Dialogue, a two-day event, commenced today in Port Moresby (Monday, 28th).
It has brought together ICT ministers and delegates from across the Pacific region.
During the welcome dinner on Sunday, Prime Minister James Marape highlighted the immense potential of the Pacific, emphasisng unity among diverse nations.
He encouraged collaboration and engagement, underscoring their influence on shaping the future and stressing the significance of the Pacific region’s airspace across sectors.
The two-day gathering, themed “Smart Pacific, One Voice – Creating a Digital Future together for the Pacific,” will feature high-level discussions and a cultural outing in New Ireland Province on Tuesday.
Minister for ICT Timothy Masiu mentioned that the meeting originated from the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Bucharest, Romania, and is more than a mere congregation of officials; it symbolises shared willpower, dedication, and destiny. He expressed how the diverse and unique nations are united by common threads of challenges, opportunities, and aspirations.
“The dialogue allows ministers to reaffirm their commitment to a unified voice that resonates within the region and echoes across international forums,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso praised Minister Masiu’s leadership and acknowledged Marape-Rosso’s government’s full support for the dialogue.
He described the event as a beacon of the region’s aspirations, driving harmonious advancement through technology for a brighter, more equitable future.
The dialogue underscores Pacific nations’ dedication to harnessing ICT’s potential for collective progress and strategising on technology’s role in enhancing societies, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the region.
