Prime Minister James Marape has reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s intention to strengthen its trade and investment partnership with the United States, announcing that Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso will travel to the United States for scheduled meetings with US government officials.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Moresby, Prime Minister Marape said the visit underscores PNG’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations beyond security cooperation and into expanded economic engagement.

The Prime Minister highlighted that PNG and US have recently signed a number of agreements, including security arrangements and Memoranda of Understanding, following high-level engagements such as the visit by the US Defense Secretary to PNG.

“We have already signed security arrangements to strengthen our relationship with the United States, and we are now looking forward to seeing increased investment flows into Papua New Guinea,” Mr Marape said.

He emphasized that PNG was keen to see greater US involvement in key sectors of the economy, including fisheries, mining, oil and gas, agriculture, and tourism. According to the Prime Minister, ongoing discussions are expected to further advance cooperation in resource development and other strategic industries.

Prime Minister Marape said Papua New Guinea valued its relationship with the United States, describing it as one of the world’s leading democracies, and expressed confidence that the established treaties provide a solid foundation for expanded economic collaboration.

“We do not only want a political relationship, but a progressive investment partnership in Papua New Guinea, built on the treaties and agreements already in place,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Rosso’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening economic dialogue and exploring opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries as PNG positions itself for long-term growth and international partnerships.
