PNG TRADE UNION CONGRESS CALLS FOR MINIMUM WAGE RATES TO BE REVIEWED

THE Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress is proposing to the newly appointed Minister for Labor and Immigration, Hon. Bryan Kramer to seek cabinet approval for the institution and convention of the Minimum Wages Board to review the minimum wage rates.
General Secretary of the Congress, Clemence Kanau made this proposal in response to the many adverse issues affecting the workers in the country, with the most glaring one being the rising inflation.
“The increasing price of goods and services overpowers the power of the meager kina that a worker earns fortnightly, which can hardly sustain him or her family for two weeks,” said Kanau in a press statement.
The Congress is also proposing for the Organizational Health and Safety Laws, and the Industrial Organizations Act to be reviewed.
Kanau added that the Congress was glad for the appointment of Hon. Kramer as the Minister for Labor and Immigration because they believed that, as a second term member of the parliament, he had the experience and fair knowledge of labor related issues in the country.
“Therefore, the trade union fraternity or industrial organizations like unions and associations representing workers are looking forward to working with Hon. Kramer in his capacity as the Labor and Immigration Minister in this government,” he said.
