Call to fix deteriorating highway

By Zebedee Kumpio

A COMMUNITY leader and long-time public servant from Nipa Kutubu District, has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating road conditions along the Poroma section of the National Highway, affecting travellers from Southern Highlands Province (SHP) to Hela Province.

Mr Amos Pul, reported that the fast-flowing Nembi River has eroded half of the road in Utuphia Village within the Poroma LLG.

“The river has been eroding this side of the road for years, and now half of it is completely washed away,” Mr. Pul stated.

“In the next few weeks, the road will be completely washed off, causing a complete halt in movement for the traveling public on the national highway.”

He called on the Government, through the Department of Works and Highways (DOWH), to address this issue urgently before it incurs greater costs for the government.

He added that if the rain and flooding continue in the area, it will entirely wash away the road.

Mr Pul has called on the DOWH to engage a local contractor to repair this section of the highway.
