THE Papua New Guinea Defence Force is insistent in bringing the member who allegedly tortured and killed his spouse to justice.
“We cannot accept this act,” Chief of Defence Force Rear Admiral Philip Polewara said.
“It is totally unacceptable and does not reflect the values and beliefs of the PNGDF. And I want to assure the parents and the family of the deceased spouse that we will work with the Police to hunt and apprehend the member so that justice can be served.”
The PNGDF through the Military Police has taken action since report of the incident was received on Sunday 9th February. On the same day, military police personnel had moved into the member’s room and cordoned it off to allow for civil Police to conduct their investigations. It also began canvasing the FSB Single Quarters and has since extended its search to other PNGDF establishments.
Formal enquiries were also conducted to establish witnesses before, during and after the incident. This has resulted in identifying a key witness to the crime.
“Our military police personnel are working closely with their
counterparts at the Boroko Police station to ensure this matter goes to court,” Rear Admiral Polewara said.
“On our part, we will investigate and if there are accomplices, they will be brought to face the hand of the law.
“Again, I want to assure the parents and the family of the deceased that PNGDF does not take the gruesome crime lightly and will use all means necessary to ensure justice is served.
“I deeply regret that the alleged actions of a member have caused profound loss to a family and pray for God’s comfort at this time.”
