In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, the Chinese Embassy in Papua New Guinea has extended its support to the Wapenamanda District following the devastating landslide that affected the region.
Minister-Counsellor Pang Hanzhao, Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy, handed over K25,000 to the district authorities yesterday, underscoring China’s commitment to disaster recovery and its enduring friendship with PNG.
During the ceremony, Minister-Counsellor Pang expressed his sincere condolences to the victims of the landslide, conveying China’s deepest sympathy to the affected families and communities.
“We stand with the people of Wapenamanda in these difficult times, and we are here to offer our support as a true friend of PNG,” Mr Pang said. He further emphasized that China’s commitment to disaster response and relief in PNG has been steadfast, highlighting the long-standing diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
Wapenamanda District officials were deeply grateful for China’s timely assistance. Representatives from the district extended their heartfelt thanks, describing China as a “true friend” and a “steadfast partner” in times of crisis.
They also acknowledged the consistent support China has provided to PNG in the face of natural disasters over the years.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and PNG in 1976, China has been an important partner in assisting PNG with disaster management and recovery efforts.
This new donation follows a series of contributions from China to PNG, demonstrating its ongoing dedication to helping the country respond to natural disasters and promote resilience.
In 2018, following the devastating 7.5-magnitude earthquake in PNG, China donated US$800,000 to support relief efforts.
Similarly, after another earthquake struck the region in 2022, China provided US$100,000 in cash assistance, along with millions of dollars in aid for the repair of vital infrastructure, including the Kumul Submarine Cable Network. Last year, after a severe landslide in Enga Province, China donated US$1.2 million and provided disaster relief supplies, including solar lights, blankets, and sleeping bags.
Minister-Counsellor Pang reiterated that disaster prevention, mitigation, and response remain key priorities for China’s partnership with PNG.
“China is committed to continuing its efforts to assist PNG in enhancing its disaster prevention and reduction capacities, as part of our broader commitment to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our two countries,” Mr Pang affirmed.
As the Wapenamanda District begins its recovery process, the K25,000 donation from China is expected to provide crucial financial support for the immediate relief efforts, helping to rebuild lives and infrastructure.
The Chinese Embassy’s gesture reflects the enduring bond between the two nations and their shared goal of fostering mutual prosperity and resilience in the face of natural disasters.
This act of generosity is yet another chapter in the growing relationship between China and PNG, underscoring the deep-rooted ties of friendship and cooperation that continue to benefit both nations.
