Commodore Philip Polewara confirmed as Chief of Defence Force

COMMODORE Philip Polewara is now promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and confirmed as Chief of Defence Force.

Along with Commodore Polewara, Opa Opa Lari was also promoted to the rank of BRIGADIER and confirmed as Deputy Chief of Defence Force.

The small but significant ceremony was held this morning and was witnessed by Prime Minister Hon James Marape and Minister for National Defence and Emergency Services, Hon. Dr. Billy Joseph Minister Joseph, congratulate Rear Admiral Polewara and Brigadier General Lari and acknowledged their deep-rooted service and commitment to PNGDF.

“The Government has made a deliberate decision to promote these two career officers who rose through the ranks. Both are highly qualified and embody the values and work ethic essential to this role,” he said.

“After more than a year of interim leadership within PNGDF, this confirmation provides stability and direction for the country’s military.”

Dr. Joseph emphasized that establishing formal leadership was essential in addressing regional security concerns.

“We are committed to strategically aligning and modernizing the PNGDF to meet our national security responsibilities,” he said.

“This decision comes at a time where our nation approaches its 50th anniversary and sets its course for the next half-century.”
In his address, Dr. Joseph thanked the former Chief Defence Force (CDF) leaders, who served PNGDF with dedication and pride.

He noted the importance of respecting the decisions of the National Executive Council (NEC), which holds authority over the PNGDF, as enshrined in the Constitution.

Dr. Joseph praised Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and the Government for their commitment to ensuring robust national security.

“Current security challenges dictate the need for strong leadership within the PNGDF, and the Government has acted decisively to protect our national interests,” he added.

With this leadership team in place, the PNGDF is expected to refocus on foundational principles while addressing emerging security needs in the region.
