Work will soon commence on the 1.2-kilometre road connecting Kipo and the Saraga area in the National Capital District.

This follows the groundbreaking ceremony of the K9.2 million road project which took place on Thursday at Kipo settlement in East Boroko.

Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said, “This is very historic moment for this important event for this road which starts at Kipo and Saraga. This road joins the people of Simbu and Eastern Highlands living in these areas.

“I thank you for your patience, understanding and appreciating what we are doing for you and your community.

“Short term pain for long term gain, very important with this road, we will disrupt the lives of some of our citizens in Kipo.

“We have had numerous conversations about how the people would be given humanitarian assistance when their homes are pulled down to allow for the road to go through,” he said.

This is phase two of the project where roadwork will work towards and connect to the Saraga section of the road.

Work from Saraga began in March this year also following an official ceremony at Ragamuga, Saraga.

Mr Tkatchenko said Moresby South District has acquired nearly 18 hactares of the land on the ridge of the mountain towards Saraga with support from the Lands Department, NCD and traditional land owners.

He acknowledged the lands department for issuing the title to NCD and the subdivision through the surveyor general.

“We have acquired that and and sub divided into 300 allotments which are all numbered and ready to go.

“We will also have land available with that sub-division for any future issues between Ragamuga and Kipo.

“The road will give you water, power and schools for your children. There will also be service such as supermarket and banks.

“I thank NCD Governor Powes Pakop and the NCDC board for the project which will greatly benefits the resident communities and complement other ongoing development work throughout the city.

“This road will change the face of this areas, and will allow water, power and drainage systems among others to be connected along the road link.

“It will open this area up as well to business and development opportunities for residents and the corporate sector and connect the city.”

Mr Tkatchenko said the contractor awarded through NCDC will work with the communities to employ young man and woman.

“People of Kipo, don’t fight back, this development is positive, and it will allow for the people of Kipo to grow.”
