Daulo district of Eastern Highlands province has allocated K1 million as school fee assistance for tertiary school students for this year.
The school fee assistance programme is for students in the district, and will not benefit Daulo students residing in other parts of the country, also students not from Daulo but are residing in the district.
The funds were allocated during a special Daulo District Development Authority (DDA) meeting headed by Daulo MP Pogio Ghate as the chairman recently in Asaro district headquarters.
Mr Gahate who is also the vice Minister for Agriculture said the district under his leadership has paid schools fees for students in the district for four years in a row now.
“We have spent more than K4 million in this exercise over the last four years.”
The Member told students and parents that education is an important development priority for his administration and he will continue to support it.
Mr Gahate said the K1 million funding is from the District’s Services Improvement Programme (DSIP) funds, under its education sector component.
“Education is important so we want all our children to be better educated and return to develop the district, province and country,” Mr Gahate stressed.
So far, more than 6,000 students in the district have benefited from the programme since it started four years ago.
The MP called on parents in the district to do their part by supporting their children and not to become lazy.
District administrator Samo Tobi, in a notice advised parents that the school fee support scheme is for students attending universities, technical schools, colleges, vocational centers and private institutions.
Mr Tobi said Elementary to secondary schools will not be assisted as the National Government has paid the school fees already.
More than 1,000 students from the districts will benefit from the K1 million for this year alone.
