Member for Nipa-Kutubu and Defense Minister, Dr Billy Joseph, has called for a free, fair, and peaceful conduct of the Local Level Government (LLG) elections currently underway in his electorate.
In a public statement made outside the court house, Dr. Billy urged all politicians and community leaders to refrain from undue influence or interference, warning that any attempt to manipulate the process could destabilise communities and weaken public trust in the democratic system.
I want to make it very clear, neither I nor the Governor has any authority or right to interfere with the LLG elections. These elections must not be influenced by anyone. We must let our people make their own free and rightful choices,” he said.
Dr. Billy emphasized that the Electoral Commission is conducting the LLG elections on behalf of the Department of Provincial Affairs and Local Level Government and stressed the importance of allowing the Commission to carry out its duties without disruption. “As leaders, we must respect the process, support the Electoral Commission, and allow our people to elect their ward members peacefully,” he added.
The Defense Minister also appealed to supporters and local communities to remain calm and respect the rule of law, noting that violence or intimidation has no place in the electoral process.
He warned that any attempts to hijack the LLG elections through force, bribery, or threats would be condemned and reported to relevant authorities. “True leadership is about allowing people to speak through the ballot. Let us lead by example and show maturity in how we manage our responsibilities,” Dr. Billy said.
His remarks come amid increasing tension in parts of the Southern Highlands Province, especially the hijacking and disturbances in the Upper Nipa LLG, where local-level elections often generate high interest and occasional conflict. Dr. Billy reiterated his commitment to promoting peace, transparency, and democratic values in the Nipa-Kutubu electorate.
