Dekena hails government for STEM Scholarship initiative

MINISTER for Education, Hon. Lucas Dekena, commended the Marape-Rosso Government for their vision and persistence in advancing the STEM scholarship initiative, which enables students from Papua New Guinea to study abroad.

Speaking at the farewell dinner for STEM students on Sunday evening, Minister Dekena praised the government for driving this initiative forward.

Minister Dekena addressed the students, acknowledging their dedication, hard work, and curiosity, which have brought them to this significant milestone.

“You are not just students; you are future leaders, innovators, and problem solvers—exactly what our country needs,” Minister Dekena said.

“You carry with you the hopes and aspirations of your families, your communities, and your entire country as you venture across the Pacific to the United States.”

The initiative is a significant step for Papua New Guinea, aiming to cultivate a generation of professionals in Information Technology and Engineering. In the future, this will reduce the country’s reliance on expatriates.

Dekena stressed the importance of their studies and urged them to embrace every challenge, striving for excellence in their careers.

Minister Dekena also announced the current government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and his readiness to deliver under his office.

He said that as the government creates more opportunities for students to study abroad, they are also increasing the number of spaces available at universities within the country.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education is considering options for sending teachers to study in the USA through the STEM program, starting in 2025.

Minister Dekena remains steadfast in his commitment to fostering educational programs in the country and continues to support Pangu Pati and its policies in education.
