A FIGHT between two ethnic groups at the Madang Teachers College (MTC) in Madang has caused the school to cancel the end of semester exams.
The fight which started last Thursday (10th November) involved students from Eastern Highlands and Simbu.
The school had to cancel the three remaining exams which was scheduled on the 11th November, because of the disturbance.
This paper was informed that the fight broke out due to a drunken brawl between the two groups, causing disturbance to the college which resulted in the cancellation of the exams.
Deputy Principal Academic, Mr Christopher Jambahavi said the fight had nothing to do with the school.
“The fight was a quarrel between the two groups,” Mr Jambahavi said.
He said the police were called in and calm the situation. He said the school had to call-off the exams because the students were not in the right mindset to sit for the exams.
“The school called in the two groups and the matter was settled with the help of the police,” he added.
He said however, disciplinary measures are a pressing issue which the school will look into and improve on.
He said the school had been too lenient on disciplinary measures which allowed students to misbehave.
“Discipline issues are something the school will have to look into and tighten it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Principle said investigation is currently underway to identify the main cause of the fight.
