A total of 335 Grade 12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students from the six National Schools of Excellence (NSOE) will sit for their annual STEM examinations from today, Monday September 1 to Friday, September 5, 2025.

The participating schools are Sogeri National School of Excellence (62 students), Aiyura NSOE (77 students), Passam NSOE (62 students), Wawin NSOE (39 students), Keravat NSOE (27 students) and Port Moresby National School of Excellence (68 students).

The examination subjects include Mathematics, Technology (ICT), Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Engineering.

STEM examinations were first introduced in 2022, and this year marks the fourth batch of STEM students who will be sitting for this exam.

These assessments are conducted separately from the National Upper Secondary School Examinations, which will take place later in October.

Secretary for Education, Dr Uke Kombra, emphasized on the importance of STEM education in shaping Papua New Guineas future workforce.

“This STEM exam is critical in identifying our top STEM students who will later receive scholarships to further their studies overseas.

“STEM education is essential for Papua New Guinea as we prepare a new generation of thinkers, innovators and problem-solvers to drive our nations development over the next 50 years.”

Dr Kombra also directed all school heads to strictly comply with Measurement Services Division (MSD) requirements during the examinations.

“Principals and deputy principals are required to remain in their schools during the entire examination period and ensure strict enforcement of MSD regulations,” he said.

“Penalties for students and schools that breach these rules will be severe, including non-certification and further investigations.”

He extended his best wishes to all Grade 12 STEM students across the six National Schools of Excellence as they prepare to sit for their exams.

Marking for the STEM exams will be carried out in Port Moresby from September 6 to 11, 2025.
