NINE STUDENTS SET FOR STUDIES IN USA THROUGH YER EDUCATION FOUNDATION

A POIGNANT mix of tears and joy filled the air at Jackson’s International Airport in Port Moresby yesterday, as five young Papua New Guineans departed for the United States to pursue their studies through the Yer Education Foundation.

The Yer Education Foundation Inc. (YEFI), a non-profit organization registered in both the USA and PNG, aims to create pathways for Papua New Guinean students to secure placements in tertiary institutions in the United States.

This year, the foundation has facilitated the study placements of nine Papua New Guineans, marking another milestone in the program’s rollout. However, at the International Terminal Departure lounge, YEFI board members informed the media that four of the students faced visa issues and are expected to depart early next week.

YEFI’s mission is to promote and encourage Papua New Guinean students to access quality educational opportunities in the USA, offering a second chance for Grade 12 dropouts who missed out on DHERST selections in PNG.

In addition to facilitating educational opportunities, the foundation plays a crucial role in helping Papua New Guineans pursue further studies in their chosen fields.

YEFI’s Founder and Chairman, Mr. Jackson Yer, was present with his wife Elizabeth Yer, and staff members Paniza Kera and Abednego Pakuma to farewell the five students. Upon arrival in the USA, the students will enroll in their respective institutions.

“This is a humanitarian approach to increasing the number of educated Papua New Guineans who will help drive this country forward,” Mr Yer said.

The Yer Education Foundation is committed to sending more students from PNG to the United States, with a focus on alleviating illiteracy by empowering the nation’s human resources through education and essential life skills for a sustainable future.
