TWO women are among eight people reported missing after they left Madang two weeks ago for Manus but have yet to reach their destination.

Police in Manus reported the missing boat, a 23-footer with 40 HP Engine that was reportedly loaded with bags of betelnut and the eight passengers on board.

The boat left Madang Province on May 22 and was headed for Manus Province. It was expected to arrive in Manus on May 24 but did not arrive as expected.

The Provincial Police Commander (PPC) senior inspector David Yapu said the eight passengers comprised of six males and two females.

He said today it has been almost 10 days and the boat still had not reached Manus.

Mr Yapu said a search party was sent out to find the missing boat but could not locate them in the Manus waters.

“We have been in contact with the National Disaster and Emergency Service in Port Moresby to activate a safety broadcast for vessels travelling between Vanimo, Wewak, Madang and Manus to keep watch for the missing boat and the eight passengers.”

He also warned people traveling out at sea to take extra precaution due to the current strong winds and rough seas experienced at this time.

“Your safety is paramount therefor before you go out at sea, take heed of bad weather warnings,” said PPC Yapu.
