Empowered Gerehu youths take action to enhance community safety.

By Gabriel Katuho

IN a proactive effort to curb lawlessness and enhance public safety in the Gerehu area, a group of youths spanning Stages 1 to 7 have come together to collaborate with local law enforcement authorities.
Their mission is to bolster community policing, contribute to security measures, and ensure the well-being of their neighborhood.

This promising initiative gained official approval and recognition from the Gerehu Police Station following a briefing with the Station Commander.
Spearheaded by Bomai Ninkama, the group has been diligently patrolling bus stops and public spaces for the past two weeks.

Ninkama proudly revealed that the group’s membership has swelled to over 200 youths encompassing all seven stages of Gerehu during their brief but impactful operational period. In addition to their role in enhancing security, the group is committed to raising awareness about law-and-order issues and engaging in event organization within the community.

Ninkama explained that the group plans to refine its operational structure with feedback from community members and guidance from the police.

Officer in Charge of Community Policing, Sergeant Daniel Oki, expressed support for the initiative in an interview with the Sunday Bulletin Newspaper.

He stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of residents, particularly mothers and young girls who often feel vulnerable while traveling or walking around Gerehu.

“In recent times, there have been numerous incidents of hold-ups and bag snatchings, which have raised concerns within our community. Our youth have responded by creating an association that encourages collaboration among community members to address these issues and maintain a clean and safe environment,” Sergeant Oki stated.

He emphasised that this community-driven initiative would not only make Gerehu safer but also improve the ease of travel, freedom of movement for residents, and create a conducive environment for local vendors to conduct their businesses.

Sergeant Oki acknowledged that through observation, the Gerehu community had already noted the positive impact of youth engagement on community safety.
He also indicated that while the group currently operates without external funding, it would seek sponsorship opportunities in the future to sustain its activities.
