THE Kerowagi District of Simbu has presented a budget of about K22.5 million for this year, aimed at improving basic services in the district.
This is a commendable effort by the Member for Kerowagi, Hon. Francis Kikin Siune, to ensure that the district is able to become economically independent and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
Hon Siune presented the budget recently on behalf of the district to the Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey in Port Moresby.
The budget focuses on developing the district’s potential to become economically independent, with K8 million – a biggest slice of the budget – allocated to infrastructure sector.
Hon Siune said this programme is aimed at connecting the districts through roads and bridges, and is a great way to improve the infrastructure of the district.
He has stated that the district also focuses on the agricultural sector.
He said a K2.6 million is allocated to Economic Development, with a specific focus on agriculture and SME concepts. The MP also highlighted the importance of financial literacy in the success of the SME program, emphasizing that most people need to be financially literate.
“In this sector I am focused on helping the local entrepreneurs in the district to build themselves and become financially independent,” Hon Siune said.
Hon Siune also plans to improve the SME programme to benefit even the small holder in the district, with the goal of making them millionaires. This move is expected to encourage a saving culture and a business mindset, which will further boost the economic sector in the district.
The MP also expressed the need for the district to be digitalized, and has allocated funds to improve that.
He added that education sector is also a priority for the district which he plans to initiate much-needed projects that are outlined in the budget.
“We are planning on decentralizing the payroll system and connect schools to the internet, improving access to education and making it more efficient,” he said.
“And so, we have allocated about K1.8mil to the education sector to generate this project and boost education in the district.
“This is a great way to ensure that the district is able to keep up with the times and provide its citizens with the necessary resources to succeed,” he said.
Hon Siune has also allocated funds to seal roads in the district and link Kerowagi district to Kundiwa Town, which is about 35km away. This will help to improve the transportation infrastructure of the district and make it easier for people to travel.
The district has also allocated funds to various sectors, such as health, law-and-order, rural electrification projects, water supply projects and community sector developments to ensure that the funds are equally distributed to benefit the people. Manager Bonney Olam, First Secretary David Gigmai and District Administrator Peter Wel Kagl looks on.
