The long-awaited Finongan–Gafang–Bungki–Wawin Ring Road Project has officially commenced in the Upper Erap area of Nawaeb District, marking a major step forward in improving rural connectivity and development in Morobe Province,
The project was launched at Finongan Village on 6 January 2026, in a ceremony that brought together community members, local leaders and district officials. The new ring road is expected to open up some of the most remote parts of the district, providing easier access to essential services and economic opportunities.

Funded entirely by the Nawaeb District Development Authority (DDA) and contracted under Port, the project reflects the district’s focus on delivering practical infrastructure that directly benefits rural communities.
A notable feature of the launch was the strong involvement of local villagers, who led the opening ceremony themselves. District officials described this as a clear sign of community ownership and partnership, which will be crucial to the success and sustainability of the project.
Nawaeb MP Theo Pelgen said the ring road aligned with his development vision of “reaching and connecting the unreached.”
“This road is more than just infrastructure—it is a lifeline that will connect our people, reduce isolation, and open doors for development across Upper Erap,” Mr Pelgen said.
Once completed, the Finongan–Gafang–Bungki–Wawin Ring Road is expected to improve access to markets, health facilities, schools and government services, while creating new opportunities for income generation and local business growth.
The Nawaeb DDA has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with communities, contractors and key stakeholders to ensure the project is delivered to standard and meets the long-term needs of the people of Upper Erap.
