Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa has called for a police patrol unit to be placed along the Highlands Highway to ensure the safety of people travelling from Lae to the upper Highlands.
Governor Rapa says he gravely concerned that many people have lost their lives while travelling on the highway.
“People getting in car accidents is okay but blocking the roads and attacking people with weapons is not good,” he said.
“This road is very important because it connects all the provinces, and it is an important asset we have in the country.
“People are blocking the roads unnecessarily due to tribal fights or council elections.”
Mr Rapa urged the Police Minister, Peter Tsiamalili Jr to ensure that police apprehend and charge the killer of the bus driver at Kompri in Eastern Highlands last week.
“We have seen on the media that a man was arrested, but details remain unclear,” he added.
