NATIONAL Capital District Governor, Hon. Powes Parkop, initiated the groundbreaking ceremony for a new road link at Pitpit Street, Waigani on Monday.
The 3.3-kilometer road will run from Waigani Pitpit Street to 8 Mile McGregor Police Barracks and will be constructed by contractor Mobile Works Limited at a cost of K9 million.
While delivering the keynote address, NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop highlighted the importance of road connectivity and the critical role roads play as a gateway to other infrastructure developments.
“Today, we are witnessing one of the outcomes that we want and that the city needs. This road is very vital, stretching from Pitpit Street to Wildlife, Kennedy Estate, and 8 Mile, exiting at McGregor Barracks,” said Governor Parkop.
“The road to a brighter future starts here. Together, we build stronger connections, stronger communities, and an amazing Port Moresby and Papua New Guinea.”
Hon. Parkop said this year is an important milestone for the country as it celebrates 50 years of independence. He added that while reflecting on the past 50 years and the progress made, it is also important to contribute to the continued development of the nation moving forward.
NCD City Manager, Mr. Ravu Frank, also emphasized the significance of road connectivity and said this project represents a major step in efforts to develop infrastructure to meet the city’s growing demands.
“This two-lane road will not only ease traffic congestion but also provide a convenient alternate route for accessing nearby areas, making travel more efficient and less stressful for residents,” Mr. Frank said.
Port Moresby North-East Open Member, Hon. John Kaupa, who was also present at the event, committed to working together with Governor Parkop to deliver much-needed services to the people.
