The Southern Highlands Provincial Government, led by Governor William Powi, has expressed deep sorrow and sympathy following a devastating fire that tore through Mendi Town last night and into the early hours of this morning.
The blaze destroyed several long-established trade stores, supermarkets, bookshops, and adjoining residential buildings along the stretch from the PNG Power Office to BSP Bank. Fortunately, both the PNG Power Office and BSP Bank were spared from the fire.
Governor Powi conveyed heartfelt condolences to the owners of Pisgah Trading, Wantok Trading, Menduli Book Shop, and all other affected business operators who suffered significant losses. Many of the destroyed businesses have served the people of Southern Highlands Province for decades, built from the ground up by hardworking individuals who played a vital role in the province’s economic and social development.
“The loss of these businesses, especially during this festive season, is heartbreaking,” Governor Powi said.
“We understand the immense pain and hardship faced by families and entrepreneurs who have invested their lives into these ventures.”
He assured affected business owners and residents that the provincial government stands firmly with them during this difficult time. Governor Powi committed to personally working towards subsidising the rebuilding of damaged properties, assisting with financing to reopen businesses, and supporting efforts to restore livelihoods.
“I will do everything within my capacity to ensure our people get back on their feet,” he said.
The Governor also called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire to establish how the incident occurred and to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In addition, Governor Powi urged the National Government to prioritise the establishment of a dedicated fire station in Southern Highlands Province, noting that repeated requests have been made for improved emergency response infrastructure.
“We urgently need a local fire response facility to better protect our communities and respond swiftly to emergencies,” he said.
Governor Powi concluded by assuring all affected business owners, families, and residents that they are not alone, reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts and future prosperity.
