PORT Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) has announced a milestone achievement in advancing heart care in PNG by successfully performing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) on three patients with the assistance of the Singapore Health Service Team.

PMGH cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Noah Tapaua said: “I am grateful to announce the first ever CABG surgery that we have now performed over the weekend.

“We have done five operations and out of the five we did three CABG and for the sake of the public, its basically what we are doing is harvesting veins and arteries on the hand on limb bypassing those blockages.

“There are different types of treatment in the coronary arteries and in the layman’s terms we always talk about heart attack. The five patients age range from 48 to 60 and about the three CABG, one was female and two males.”

Singapore’s cardiothoracic surgeon Prof Chua Yeow Leng said: “Heart disease is the biggest killer in any country.

“We are happy to report that three patients were done and last two patients are almost done by Dr Tapaua.

“To be effectively manage heart diseases you need a very good program, cardiology and heart surgery.”
