Gerehu Hospital close after staff assaulted

By MIRIAM MALAWA

THE Gerehu Hospital was forced to close its doors today following an early morning incident in which several allegedly drunken police officers barged into the facility, assaulting staff and patients.
The shocking event left a doctor severely injured, prompting widespread outrage and calls for the officers arrest.

Witnesses report that the incident occurred in the early hours when a group of police officers, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, stormed into the hospital. The officers allegedly verbally abused and physically assaulted medical staff, patients, and security personnel who attempted to intervene. The most seriously injured was a senior doctor who was badly beaten and is currently receiving treatment at Port Moresby General Hospital.

The closure of the hospital has disrupted medical services for the Gerehu community, leaving many without access to urgent care.
Staff members, shaken by the incident, have expressed fear and anger, questioning their safety while performing their duties.
Hospital workers have called for stricter security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response to the incident, Police Commissioner David Manning visited Gerehu Hospital today to meet with the distressed staff and assure them that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. Commissioner Manning condemned the actions of the officers involved, labeling the attack as unacceptable behavior that undermines the values of the police force.

“I want to assure the hospital staff and the public that we will not tolerate such misconduct within our ranks. Those responsible will face disciplinary action and the full force of the law,” Commissioner Manning said during his visit.

The commissioner further urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation, emphasizing that the actions of a few should not tarnish the reputation of the entire police force.

Gerehu Hospital management has indicated that they will work closely with authorities to ensure the safety of their staff and patients before reopening the facility.
However, they have not provided a timeline for when the hospital will resume operations.

As investigations continue, the healthcare workers are hoping for a resolution that brings justice to those affected and prevents such incidents from occurring again in the future.
