Department of Health launched the second round of its nationwide polio immunisation campaign yesterday at St Anne’s Primary School in Port Moresby.

NCD Provincial Health Authority Chief Executive Officer, Dr Robin Oge acknowledged the cooperation of parents and guardians that helped achieve outstanding results during the first round of the polio immunisation campaign.

“We achieved coverage of 97.8 per cent, then we vaccinated over 133,000 children to achieve that impact,” he said.

“Today, we are launching the second polio campaign, and we must remember that the polio virus is still present. We need to immunise every child.”

NCD Governor Powes Pakop urged citizens to come together, join hands and support the PHAs in the country.

“The vaccine is completely free and absolutely harmless.

“I can confidently say this because it’s the same immunisation we received in the 60s, and we’re still thriving today,” Governor Pakop said.
