Hunters is here to stay: Tsaka

By GABRIEL KATUHO

PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairman Sandis Tsaka says, Hunters is here to stay, even if PNG gets its 18th NRL Bid.

Tsaka made these remarks during the launch of the 2024 season and the announcement of the Hunters’ 30-man squad in Port Moresby.

Highlighting the separation of the Hunters from the PNGRFL in 2019, Tsaka noted the establishment of a distinct board and management for the team, emphasizing their autonomy.
He proudly stated that the PNGRFL is the sole shareholder of the Hunters and expressed satisfaction with the team’s current standing.

“PNGRFL board sees great future for the Hunters. The boys that are coming in, I challenged them that this is an opportunity for you. With hundreds of youths playing rugby, there’s 30 of you getting an opportunity. Take that opportunity and make something out of it,” he said.

Anticipating transformative changes in rugby league over the next decade, Tsaka emphasized the impact of the NRL bid and the Junior Pathways Program, foreseeing a positive evolution for the sport in PNG.
Despite potential developments, he affirmed the commitment to the Hunters, asserting their continued participation in the Intrust Cup even if the NRL Bid materializes.

“We believe that the PNGRFL will be working with the Hunters but we believe the Hunters are here to stay. Even if PNG gets its 18th NRL Bid, the Hunters will have its own unique space. So, we remain committed to having the Hunters playing the Intrust Cup even we get the NRL Bid. That’s the decision that we’ve made,” he said.

Tsaka acknowledged the Hunters’ role in elevating the global perception of PNG rugby league, citing their rise in rankings and the team’s contribution to professionalizing the sport and the nation. Expressing gratitude to sponsors and the coaching staff of the Panthers, Tsaka assured ongoing support from the PNGRFL Board.

With optimism stemming from the team’s performance in trial matches, Tsaka confidently predicted a successful year for the Hunters, signifying the PNGRFL’s commitment to the team’s continued growth.
