Jiwaka Police Station Commander Suspended Over Misconduct Allegations

Approved for Release

THE Police Station Commander (PSC) for Jiwaka, Inspector James Rumi, has been suspended for 21 days following allegations of misconduct, including attacking passengers of a public motor vehicle (PMV). The suspension, effective from September 2, 2024, will allow for an internal police investigation into the matter.

Chief Inspector Albert Korin, the Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Jiwaka, confirmed the suspension, stating that the internal investigation would be conducted by the Police Internal Investigation Unit (IIU). The investigation will aim to gather factual information surrounding the alleged incident.

PPC Korin emphasized that he does not tolerate misconduct within the police force, stating: “The communities expect nothing less from the rank and file, starting from those officers in command, as they are all bound by the same laws.”

Inspector Rumi is accused of involvement in an incident that occurred on August 11, 2024, between 4 and 5 p.m. at the Banz Police Station. The PSC, along with his wife, allegedly escorted a PMV bus full of passengers heading to Lae into the station, where they attacked the passengers, driver, and crew. Witnesses from the Banz Police Station reported that the PSC’s wife also threw stones at the bus, breaking its windows.

In addition to the alleged attack by the PSC, spectators from a nearby rugby league game reportedly joined in, assaulting passengers and looting their belongings.

PPC Korin added that the police would pursue disciplinary measures against the PSC in accordance with the law if criminal behavior is confirmed. He noted that this case would serve as a strong warning to other officers who might believe they can act with impunity.

“The PSC would be disciplined and dealt with according to the law where criminal behavior is found. This would serve as a firm warning to other police officers who think they could get away with such rogue behavior,” Korin said.

PPC Korin further confirmed that the PMV driver, crew, and a female passenger were arrested and charged under Section 386 of the Criminal Code Act. Their court appearance for mention occurred on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
