CHAIRMAN of the Public Sector Reform Committee and Oro Governor, Gary Juffa has supported calls made by Enga Governor, Grand Chief Sir Peter Ipatas to bring in international intervention.

This is to support lack of man power issues faced by the Police to address the increasing crimes and lawlessness in the country.

Governor Juffa has made this call considering the lack of man power currently faced by the Police force to address the alarming crimes and lawlessness in the country.

“I joined Governor (Grand Chief Sir) Peter Ipatas and a number of the members of Parliament who are insisting that we must consider international intervention.

“Our Police force needs help, right now, we have not improve on the statistics. The ratio recommended by the United Nations is one Policeman to 400 (1:400).

“However, in Papua New Guinea, it is still one Policeman to 1200 (1: 1200),” Governor Juffa said.

He added that the increase in lawlessness over the years has affected the facets of development in the country.

“Investors are spending a significant amount of money to security, ordinary citizens in rural areas , in urban areas involved in SME, involved in agriculture and other activities are unable to operate without fear or favor .

“They are inundated with problems caused by criminals. There is an upsurge in crime throughout the whole country and we need to do something about this.

“I speak as the Chairman of the Public Sector Reform Committee and I totally support the call by Governor Ipatas that we need International intervention.

“We need to rebuild our Police force, security is the number one priority of this country, when there is security , there can be economic development and progress , without security, without law and order , there will be very minimal progress.

“We are seeing provinces such as Milne Bay which is traditionally peaceful place, now inundated with law and order issues.

“Every other province witch killings, witch-hunting; all these things that never used to happen before.

“Violent crimes, transnational crimes, the whole country is crying out for attention, it is time that we start to look seriously at law and order.

“I totally support the call by Governor that we must consider bringing in the Australian Federal Police or any other such intervention that the Australians Government is willing to assist us with,” Governor Juffa said.
