KEREMA TOWN TO BE LIT UP BY NEW GENERATOR SET

THE provincial capital of Gulf Province will be lit up after constant power blackouts with reliable supply of electricity to be accessed by businesses houses, government departments and town residents with the installation of a new generator by PNG Power Limited (PPL) this week.

Present to witness the commissioning ceremony was Kerema Open MP and Vice Minister for Petroleum and Energy Hon. Thomas Opa, who was on the ground.

He said despite many criticisms and problems, PPL Kerema in partnership with the Kerema District Development Authority (KDDA), has managed to commission the new 1-megawatt genset successfully.

Opa said that Kerema Town consumes 400 kilowatt per day so there is room for expansion to full capacity as current fuel supplies may be an issue given that PPL uses 9 drums of diesel per day (1800 litres per day) and require about 270 drums for one month.

He assured the management and staff of PPL Kerema that the KDDA will assist with K100,000 in fuel subsidy support so the requirement of 270 drums per month will be adequately met accordingly.

He also committed to replace the old fuel tank on site that stores diesel for the generator set as it was old and rusty.

It is the KDDA’s determination to ensure the provincial capital of Gulf Province has reliable supply of electricity to support the township on a regular basis.
