The Wonkwang University of South Korea is keen to collaborate with the universities of Papua New Guinea (PNG) especially in health and agriculture space.

This was made known during the meeting between the Minister for International Trade and Investment, Richard Maru, and his delegation and the President of Wonkwang University, Park SungTae, and his executives yesterday.

Minister Maru said he will link them with the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology to discuss the way forward for Wonkwang University to collaborate with the PNG University of Technology and the new PNG University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“With Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to open its office in PNG, we hope to work them to identify what programs Wonkwang Univesity can assist us with through our universities,” Mr Maru said.

The Minister and his delegation’s visit to Wonkwang University followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of International Trade and Investment and Wonkwang University in September which outlined cooperation in vocational training, talent development, research, trade, and industrial collaboration.

Mr SungTae also announced that Wonkwang University will be sending a medical team to Port Moresby late this year to provide free medical services to reinforce the relationship between the two countries.

Mr Maru thanked the university for their drive and passion in pushing to enhance the relationship between PNG and South Korea.

“I will put them in contact with the CEO of Port Moresby General Hospital to arrange for their visit,” he said.
