Liquor Ban in Lae Ahead of Independence Celebrations

Approved for Release

A liquor ban will be imposed in Lae from Friday, 13th September, to Tuesday, 17th September, in preparation for the 49th Independence Anniversary celebrations. The announcement was made by Acting Lae Metropolitan Commander, Senior Inspector James Luan.

The liquor ban, Initiated by the Morobe Provincial Liquor Licensing and signed by Governor Luther Wenge, is part of measures to ensure the celebrations are peaceful and orderly.

Commander Luan urged citizens to act responsibly during the celebrations.

“If anyone is thinking of drinking alcohol, then drink sensibly and behave themselves. Never cause any arguments, quarrels, and fights because the law will come down hard on any offenders who drink and misbehave,” he said.

He also Issued a stern warning against drinking in motor vehicles, stating, “Do not take alcohol and drinking sprees in motor vehicles. If you are caught by the police, you will be arrested and charged.”

Commander Luan assured Lae residents that enough police personnel would be deployed to ensure peace and order. He said the Lae Metropolitan Command has put strategies in place to handle any potential violence, threats, or disturbances during the celebrations.

“There will be adequate police personnel presence and visibility at all sectors of the city, covering both motorised and foot beat patrols, stop and search of suspicious persons, and motor vehicles. The police will apprehend and charge any offenders who come into conflict with the law,” he said.

He called on all citizens to respect the rule of law and contribute to a peaceful celebration.

“All citizens and communities in the city must play a crucial role by respecting the rule of law, standing against injustice, and fostering a spirit of mutual respect and understanding,” Commander Luan said.

“We can build a society where justice prevails and every individual is treated with dignity,” he said, urging everyone to continue working together to ensure peace and harmony in the future.
