An executive of Foe Association in Kutubu Southern Highlands Province has made a statement on the recent landowners’ notice to the state.
Association Executive Jotham Yawari said that the people of Kutubu, urge the government to refrain from creating problems in their region.
“The government has already created significant and unresolved issues in Porgera, and we do not wish to see the same fate befall Kutubu.”
For over 35 years, the Kutubu project has operated in a peaceful environment, supported by law-abiding citizens who have benefited from the oil project, until the Ministerial Determination of 2022 which was signed and endorsed by the former Petroleum Minister.
“The community has been content with how the benefits were shared, despite the Southern Highlands Provincial Government (SHPG) receiving 70% of the proceeds, yet failing to deliver tangible benefits to the people of Kutubu,” added Yawari.
Mr. Yawari further stated that they strongly appeal to the current Petroleum Minister and the State to intervene and resolve this matter in a manner that will bring about peaceful dialogue and a fair resolution, ensuring that all parties involved are satisfied and the people of Kutubu continue to live in peace.
“We urge that this matter be addressed with the utmost urgency and respect for the people who have long maintained peace in the region,” concluded Yawari.
