Madang Province has reached a significant infrastructure milestone with the commencement of hotmix asphalt works on the long-awaited Madang Airport to Town Central Business District (CBD) four-lane road upgrade.
The K119.4 million project, funded by the National Government under the flagship Connect PNG Program, marks a major step toward improving transport efficiency, boosting economic activity and enhancing Madang’s appeal as a tourism and commercial hub.
For years, the airport-to-town corridor has been a source of frustration for commuters, businesses and visitors due to poor road conditions and traffic congestion. The start of hotmix asphalt laying now signals a transition from deteriorated road surfaces to a modern, high-capacity transport corridor.

The project scope includes the construction of four lanes of high-grade hotmix asphalt, a bypass road and a steel arch bridge over the Wagol River connecting towards Divine Word University and Tusbab. It also features improved drainage systems designed for Madang’s tropical climate, installation of street lighting, and enhanced road safety measures for both motorists and pedestrians.
The commencement of works has been welcomed by the Madang business community, with expectations that the upgraded road will generate wide-ranging economic benefits. Improved road conditions are expected to significantly reduce vehicle maintenance costs, improve freight efficiency from the airport, and enhance access to Madang’s waterfront resorts and commercial areas.
Property owners and businesses along the corridor are also anticipating increased property values and foot traffic, while small and medium enterprises (SMEs), including local farmers and artisans, are expected to benefit from improved access to central markets.
“This investment is more than a road project—it is a catalyst for economic growth,” stakeholders said, noting that reliable infrastructure is critical to restoring investor confidence in the province.
While the public has been advised to expect temporary traffic disruptions during the construction period, authorities say the long-term benefits will far outweigh the inconvenience.
Once completed, the four-lane upgrade is expected to position Madang as a more accessible, business-friendly and modern province, aligning with the national vision of a more connected Papua New Guinea under the Connect PNG Program.
