UP to 30 boxers are set to compete in the Manus Boxing Championships, which kick off tomorrow (Wednesday, 25th of June 2025).

Tournament Coordinator Michael Kuam said registrations are still coming in and expects the number of participants to increase before the opening bell.

“Preparations have already begun at Sahat Hall in Lorengau Town,” Kuam said.

“The ring is being set up and the venue cleaned in time for the official launch on today (Tuesday).”

The tournament will be boosted by the participation of 12 promising young fighters identified during the recent Pobuma LLG Interschool Carnival, which featured a boxing tournament for students across the LLG.

Kuam said the championships aim to unearth new talent for Manus’ development squad and finalize the provincial senior team for the upcoming National Boxing Championships in Lae later this year.

“These new talents will undergo further training and development in Lae,” he added.

The fighters will compete in 10 weight divisions across both male and female categories.

Adding excitement to the event is the involvement of PNG national heavyweight boxer Arthur “Stingray” Lavalou, who will lend his expertise in a coaching role.

Teams from Penabu Nali, Salien, Worei, Malapang, Buliso, and Lorengau LLG are expected to take part.

The event is proudly supported by its patron, Manus Governor Hon. Charlie Benjamin.
