PRIME Minister James Marape has returned to the country on Monday night following the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Leaders’ Summit.

Upon his arrival, he announced a key resolution agreed upon by leaders: “The MSG will formally write to the governments of France and Indonesia on the issue of Melanesian rights”.

PM Marape said the leaders reached a unified decision to advocate for the protection of Melanesian peoples, their cultures, and human rights—especially in sensitive regions like West Papua and New Caledonia.

“Melanesian people, irrespective of which sovereignty you’re in, MSG will continue to advocate for,” he said.

“The leaders agreed to express our concerns and commitments through formal communication, calling on France and Indonesia to uphold the human rights and cultural dignity of Melanesian people under their respective jurisdictions.”

The summit also addressed a range of shared regional challenges and opportunities, including climate change, cultural preservation, social welfare, international trade, human development, and regional cooperation.

PM Marape emphasized the importance of collective Melanesian action to ensure progress, justice, and resilience for their societies.

He reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s commitment to supporting the MSG’s mission—particularly in advancing peace and justice in West Papua and advocating for self-determination in New Caledonia.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister extended his appreciation to French President Emmanuel Macron for indicating the possibility of a new referendum on self-determination in New Caledonia.
