THE Internal Security Ministry intends to build police station for Mendi Munhiu district in Southern Highlands province.
MINISTER for Internal Security, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr says as long as the district MP identifies the location and capture it in its development plan in consultation with the Provincial Police Commander (PPC), his ministry will intervene to support and deliver the police station in the district.
He said the PPC and the MP need to work together first before the Internal Security Ministry steps in to assist building the infrastructure.
Minister Tsiamalili made this statement in parliament yesterday in response to a question raised by the Member for Mendi Munhiu, Raphael Tonpi.
Mr. Tonpi asked Minister Tsiamalili whether his Ministry has plans to build police stations in each district in future and if so, Mendi Munhiu needs to be considered.
“My electorate is one of the populated electorates in Southern Highlands province with a total population of almost 144, 000. I also found out that my district had no police station too compared to other districts,” Mr. Tonpi said.
He said most people think that Mendi Munhiu electorate is the urban electorate of province but it is not, 90% of the district is still rural.
The MP wants the police station to be built in Munhiu rural government station.
In response, Minister Tsiamalili Jnr said Mendi Munhiu will have one soon once the plan is captured in the development book and is signed and submitted.
He also informed the parliament that all PPCs were asked to interface with the responsible district MPs to ensure every district in the country has its own police station to look after the law and order issues and Mendi Munhiu is no exception.
