THE Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Timothy Masiu, has been assured by ICT experts that Artificial Intelligence is good for PNG.

This assurance was given during a panel discussion at the AI 2025 Summit held at Crown Hotel on Monday, when the Minister asked the question, “Is AI good for PNG?”

In response to the Minister’s question, Senior Lecturer and Program Manager at the University of Wales Trinity St David in the United Kingdom, Dr. Nitheesh Murugan Kaliyamurthy, firmly answered yes.

“I am saying yes. Whether we like it or not, AI is already here and we must adjust our approach and focus on creating use-cases that enhance employability and foster collaboration between academia and industry.”

Dr. Kaliyamurthy further emphasized the critical role of a strategic partnership among governments, industry, and academia, stressing that collaborative events like this summit can pave the way for productive outcomes. “It is essential that we work together to harness AI’s potential.

AI can revolutionize the tourism industry,” stated another panelist.

While the agreement leaned towards embracing AI, concerns and implications were also voiced.

The Minister emphasized the need for responsible governance, stating, “As we welcome AI, we must also ensure that we are safeguarding the interests of future generations. My responsibility is to provide for the best of my people.”
