Minister Niningi Challenges CLRC to Strengthen Nation’s Constitution

By GABRIEL KATUHO

JUSTICE Minister and Attorney-General Pila Niningi has challenged the Department of Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CLRC) to review and strengthen the nation’s constitution, ensuring it serves as a robust foundation for organizations across the country.

Minister Niningi made these remarks during the reappointment ceremony of Commissioners Ms. Martha Kokiva and Rev. Dr. Jack Urame, who were sworn in by Chief Magistrate, Her Worship Tracy Ganaii.

Both commissioners, who have already served four years with the CLRC, will continue for another four years, contributing to the ongoing review and improvement of Papua New Guinea’s laws.

The Minister emphasized the need to enhance existing laws, noting that while the constitution is already in place, it requires amendments to better serve the evolving needs of the nation.

He also congratulated the reappointed commissioners and stressed the critical role of the CLRC in advancing the nation’s legal framework.

In her remarks, Commissioner Kokiva expressed sincere gratitude for her reappointment and highlighted the CLRC’s key role in law reform.

“Laws are made by humans, and they are not perfect. Our job is to review and amend them before they are presented to Parliament for enactment,” she said.

“Only divine laws are perfect. Our constitution, written by people, sometimes needs revision to adapt to changing circumstances.”

Kokiva praised CLRC Secretary Dr. Mange Matui for his leadership, which fosters a vibrant and productive work environment. She pledged to remain fully committed to her duties, as entrusted by Minister Niningi, and expressed confidence in navigating the next four years with the support of her team and faith in God.

Rev. Dr. Jack Urame shared similar sentiments, commending the hardworking staff of the CLRC for their dedication to completing tasks in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, CLRC Chairman Hon. Saki Soloma thanked the commissioners’ contributions and acknowledged the staff’s commitment to ensuring thorough reviews of the nation’s laws.

He thanked the distinguished guests who attended the small but significant event.
