Moresby North East launches Minor Works Program

IN response to rising youth unemployment in the city, the Moresby North East (MNE) electorate has launched a Works Program, now in its first week, with activities underway at 300 sites along main highways, suburban streets, and drainage systems across the electorate.

The K4 million project aims to provide employment opportunities for youth in MNE.

MNE Projects Manager Ben Gende explained that the initiative covers the entire electorate, reaching areas such as Boroko, Dogura, ATS, Malolo, Kennedy, Gordons, Bomana, Laloki, the 3–14-mile areas, and parts of Waigani.

“MNE is the largest electorate in the National Capital District, with a population of residents in both settlements and suburbs, all contributing as taxpayers,” Mr. Gende said.

He noted that high unemployment has led many young people to seek financial assistance from the district office, which prompted local Member Hon John Kaupa to initiate this program.

“Many of these youths are school leavers from grades 8, 10, 12, and even higher education institutions,” Mr. Gende added.

“The Minor Works Program provides employment for these individuals in activities such as street and highway cleaning, drainage clearing, public property maintenance, highway beautification, and business center upkeep.”

The targeted areas include public institutions, storm drains, and roads. “Our aim is to break the cycle of free handouts by offering jobs that allow them to earn an income. This initiative ensures that families in MNE benefit during the country’s current economic challenges, helping to reduce petty crime linked to the high cost of living,” Mr. Gende explained.

He noted that Hon. Kaupa has assigned coordinators to lead various district programs, ensuring accountability and stability at all levels.

The MNE District Development Authority has allocated K4 million to fund this initiative.
The program budget is allocated to cover the wages of 300 contractors, each managing teams responsible for over 500 meters of road and drainage works.

While initially set for six months, the program may continue biannually, depending on available funding.

In related news, MP Kaupa will soon announce the opening of the 9 Mile Police Station, an initiative aimed at improving law and order within the electorate.
