MP Hails Road Project as Milestone for Nipa Kutubu

MEMBER for Nipa Kutubu and Minister for Defence, Hon. Dr. Billy has thanked the Marape-Rosso-Government for its flagship Connect PNG Program, highlighting the benefits the program has brought to his people.

“Today is a historic day for our district and province,” he stated.

“After 34 years of supporting PNG’s economy through the proceeds of our Kutubu project, we will finally have the Poroma to Kutubu road—from Parita to Kaimari Bridge—sealed to the highest standards,” Minister Joseph said.

He said this marks a significant milestone after 34 years of contributions from the Kutubu oil and gas projects, which have bolstered the country’s economy and provided vital funds for development.

Minister Joseph reflected on the contributions of the PNGLNG project, which alone has generated over K30 billion, with the Kutubu, Moran, and SE Mananda fields accounting for more than 40% of that since 2014.

He acknowledged that the proceeds from oil sales since 1992 have paved the way for this long-awaited infrastructure project.

“The residents of Poroma, Kutubu, and Mt. Bosavi Local Level Governments will be the major beneficiaries of this project,” he noted.

The event was attended by key local leaders, including Mr. Mark Sakai, Chairman of the Taro Water Limited, and Hon.

Daffi Meo, President of Mt. Bosavi, who joined the MP in expressing gratitude to the Marape-Rosso Government for responding to the community’s calls for improved infrastructure.

The Minister noted the journey toward this achievement, recalling his first question to Prime Minister James Marape regarding the road project and commending Governor Powi for his efforts in advocating for the road’s sealing.

“The Marape-Rosso Government has finally heard our cries,” he said, recognizing the Prime Minister’s personal commitment to the cause.

“Thank you, Governor Powi, and PMJM. This road would not be possible without your leadership,” he added, referencing a significant road trip taken by the Prime Minister and ministers through the region in December 2022.

The contract was awarded to China Railway Construction Engineering Group Limited (CRCEG), a company known for delivering major projects such as the National and Supreme Court Houses and various road sealings under tax credit initiatives.

Dr. Joseph congratulated CRCEG and called on them to ensure the highest quality of work and timely delivery for the 100.2 km road.

“I urge my people of Nipa Kutubu, especially those from Poroma and Kutubu, to embrace this project and cooperate fully. This opportunity has come after 34 years; let’s take it with both hands,” he urged.

He also expressed his gratitude to the National Executive Council for its decision, the team at the National Planning Committee, and the hardworking personnel at the Department of Works & Highways, led by Minister Hon. Solan Mirisim and Acting Secretary Dickson Holemba.
