National Capital District Police have begun random searches of Public Motor Vehicles (buses and taxis) and private vehicles for offensive weapons.

They also began a traffic awareness campaign about roadworthy vehicles and road safety.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Turi has issued directives to all police units to conduct random checks of vehicles believed to be transporting offensive weapons.

ACP Turi made the call an incident last weekend that threatened public safety.

Police units lead by NCD/Central Reservist Coordinator Chief Inspector, Ruben Giusu, conducted searches at several bus stops around the city, where they confiscated more than 20 offensive weapons.

Chief Insp Giusu commended his team for confiscating the weapons and challenged police station commanders to do likewise as people were carrying offensive weapons in public places.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simbatab commended Chief Insp Giusu and urged all police officers to keep close watch on vehicles carrying offensive weapons.

He also called on vehicle owners to adhere to the laws and conduct their business without committing any offences.
