NCD Governor Powes Parkop has announced that five significant events will be held in the nation’s capital from September 12-16.

“Our first two programs will be on Friday, the Unity Parade that will start from Murray Barracks to Ela Beach and the launching of the amazing Port Moresby, arts and music festival at Ela Beach,” Mr Parkop said.

“The third event is on the 15th to 16th of September, the One City, One Country and One People Festival at Unagi Oval Gordons.

“The fourth event is the Festival of the Thousand Tribes at Murray Barracks on the 16th of September.”

He added that the last one is PNG’s 50 Choir Boubleward on September 16.

Mr Parkop has assured the citizens that security will be their top priority during the events.

“Police will do their part, NCDC we are doing our part with the warden.

“All the venues in Murray Barracks, Unagi Oval and Ela Beach will have a private backup security to ensure everybody’s safety,” Governor Parkop said.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab reassured city residents that police would be out in force to ensure their safety during the celebrations.

“Our main focus is on violence, protecting women and children and ensuring their welfare and safety.

“There’ll be more than 2,000 police personnel on the streets,” Chief Supt Simatab said.

University of PNG Student Representative Council president Clinton Maliaba said: “UPNG will host their independence celebration on the 16th, and we want police to be present there till afternoon because UPNG is an arena that attracts most of the NCD population.”
