A NEW cut road into Ward 9 area of Wain/Erap LLG in Nawaeb District of Morobe province will open up more economic activities for the people.
The new 5 Kilometere road cut will connect villages of Kalawang, Balawang and Kasingan after 49 years of no road access.
The road funding was approved by Nawaeb District Development Authority Board through the leadership of current local MP, Hon Theo Pelgen.
The submission for the road was endorsed by Wain/Erap LLG President Hon Kunump Ameke with a funding allocation of K250, 000 to construct the road.
President Ameke whilst officiating at the road opening ceremony said, his people needed this road to have easy access for more coffee trade and the supply of fresh produce and vegetables to Lae City and Nadzab.
The President thanked Nawaeb DDA Board by saying “this road is a vital connection for economic activities and services to reach the people”.
“The people had to walk a day to reach the nearest village of Tinibi or either Sibi or Linbum village to catch PMV to Lae.”
He said people will benefit from health and other vital services through the completion of this new road access.
“Children and mothers will have access to health facilities at Torowa via vehicle than before.
“Wain/Erap LLG have the potential of coffee, cocoa, fresh produce and tourism in this area and I hope to partner with international donors or NGOs to boost trade and investment as well as basic services into this area.”
Former Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu who was present at the occasion said this road will ease the burden of the people after a long time.
“During my term, my Government had allocated funds for infrastructure to the tune of K500, 000 each year.
“I have opened the old Coffee Mill at Erap so people from the villages will now bring their coffee much easier to sell and have money in their pocket,” Mr. Saonu said.
Provincial Works Chairman Hon Phillp Poli said Morobe Provincial Government will be committed to fund the road at provincial level until the completion of the road.
Poli thanked Wain/Erap President, Nawaeb DDA and LLG Administration for their collaborative efforts to make funding available for the new road cut.
