Papua New Guinea and India have reaffirmed their longstanding friendship and cooperation following the official presentation of credentials by India’s new High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Shri Rajeev Kumar, to Governor General Grand Chief Sir Bob Bofeng Dadae at Government House today.
High Commissioner Kumar presented his Letter of Credence from the President of India, marking the start of his diplomatic tenure in PNG. In his remarks, he said it was a great honor to begin his duties during PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
“This moment is very special as it coincides with this historic milestone,” he said. “India greatly values its relationship with Papua New Guinea, and our participation in your national celebrations through the visit of our naval ship INS Kadmatt and our Minister of State for External Affairs reflects our commitment to this enduring friendship.”
Mr Kumar said both nations shared similar values as proud democracies and developing countries focused on sustainable growth, social justice, and resilience. He pledged India’s continued support in addressing common challenges such as climate change and disaster management, and noted the growth in bilateral trade, which has risen from US$182 million in 2020-21 to US$433 million in 2024-25, largely in PNG’s favor.
Governor General Sir Bob welcomed the new envoy and thanked India for its friendship and contributions over the years, including support during national emergencies and through development partnerships such as the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program.
“India has been a steadfast partner in our national journey,” Sir Bob said. “As we celebrate 50 years of independence, we are reminded of the enduring friendships that have supported us, with India standing prominently among our valued partners.”
He also praised the Indian community in PNG-about 4,000 people-for serving as a “living bridge” between the two nations.
Both leaders expressed confidence that India-PNG relations will continue to grow stronger in trade, education, and development cooperation under the shared vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
