NEW Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) under the leadership of Governor Sir Julius Chan continuous to support the development of rugby league in the province.
As such, the Governor on last Thursday, presented the K50, 000 cheque to the New Ireland Rugby Football League.
The funding was part of the Provincial Government’s annual support grant of K100, 000 under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2020 between NIPG and the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL).
The K50,000 funding was first part of that K100, 000 commitment which was presented to the representatives of the League in Kavieng.
Under the MoU, the NIPG and PNGRFL have agreed that the provincial government has continue support the New Ireland Rugby Football League with K100,000 in annual funding.
Governor Sir Julius Chan said his government will continue to support the League; however, he has cautioned the league to spend the money wisely to develop the sporting code in the province.
“We must all mobilize ourselves; we cannot just go and play the game and not give the best.
“We must be the best.
“We are all in this together. When you play the game, make sure you come home with the trophy,” he added.
Chairman of New Ireland Rugby Football league, Benjamin Wakip thanked the provincial government adding that the money will support local leagues register with the PNGRFL.
“On behalf of the New Ireland Rugby Football League and the 20 local leagues, I thank Governor Sir Julius Chan and acting Provincial Administrator Moses Taram for the funding support.
“I want to assure the provincial government, stakeholders and supporters that the money will be put into good use.
“This money will go towards supporting local leagues that meet all requirements to be part of the PNGRFL and also paying for the affiliation fees,” Mr. Wakip said.
Meanwhile, Wakip said the calendar for this year’s events including pre-season trials have been finalized and will be released soon.
